For tea lovers seeking the perfect balance of refreshment and invigorating energy, understanding the caffeine content in your favorite brews is essential. Whether you prefer the robust flavor of black tea, the delicate notes of green tea, or the herbal blends without any caffeine buzz, this guide will unveil the caffeine levels to help you make an informed choice.

The tea plant, Camellia sinensis that allows to make black tea or green tea, naturally contains caffeine, although in varying amounts.

Black Tea
  • Black tea is fully oxidized and has the highest caffeine content among true teas.
  • A typical 8-ounce (240 ml) cup of black tea contains approximately 47 mg of caffeine.
  • The caffeine content can range from 25 mg to 90 mg per cup, depending on factors such as the type of tea, brewing time, and the amount of tea used.
Green tea
  • Green tea is unoxidized and contains less caffeine than black tea.
  • An 8-ounce (240 ml) cup of green tea has approximately 28 mg of caffeine.
  • The caffeine content can range from 12 mg to 75 mg per cup, depending on the variety, brewing time, and amount of tea used.

In comparison, An 8-ounce cup of coffee typically contains around 80-100 milligrams of caffeine, though this can vary widely based on factors like roast, brewing method, and coffee bean type.

Additionally, caffeine in tea interacts differently with the body compared to caffeine in coffee. Tea’s caffeine tends to be released more gradually, resulting in a smoother and more sustained energy boost, while coffee’s caffeine often delivers a more abrupt and intense effect. The presence of other compounds in tea, like L-theanine, can also modulate caffeine’s effects, contributing to a sense of calm alertness often associated with tea consumption.

Herbal teas

Herbal teas (or herbal infusions, tisanes), are not made from the Camellia sinensis tea plant but using dried herbs, flowers, fruits, spices, etc. Therefore they do not inherently contain caffeine.

Caffeine-free infusions offer a variety of flavors and often provide benefits such as relaxation, digestion, anti-inflammation, boost immune-system, sleep support, etc. They are particularly relevant for unwinding before bedtime or for individuals seeking a calming, caffeine-free beverage throughout the day.
